Domaine Huet Wine Reviewed
61A Wine That Age Well
How many of us have ever tasted a 100 years old wine before? Not many I guess.....But I have the priviledge of tasting Domaine Huet. It certainly blew me off.....
Though I have never tasted a 100-year old wine, but my first encounter with Vouvray convinced me of its longevity.
At a casual drinking session, the chef brought out a "surprise bottle" from his cellar whose identity stumped all except one guy. We tried guessing the vintage- from the 1960s to 1990s - but no one got it right. And the wine turned out to be a 1966 Vouvray from Domaine Huet.
I must say that my first Vouvray was a privileged one for the Domained Huet's history is riveting. The winery was founded in 1928, and was raised to prominence in the late 1940s by second generation descendant Gaston Huet. A few decades later in 1988, they took Domaine Huet into the age of biodynamic winemaking process.
Wines making by this method are free of chemicals and pesticides. Harvest times are based on the lunar calendar, resulting in grapes that are believed to more purer in quality. Today, the winery covers an area of 35 hectares over three vineyards in Vouvray: Le Haut-Lieu, Le Mont and Le Clos du Bourg. At any time, half of the vines are between 30 and 50 years olds.
For Domaine Huet, you do not just get genuineness, you also get wines with character that stay youthful even in old age.

Huet is amazing, the wines from the Loire are so diverse and exciting. I only wish more people knew about them. What pleasure!
